2020 Chrysler 300 Parked

If you’re noticing water leaking from under your car in Woodstock, don’t worry. This is not typically a serious problem. There are many reasons why you could find water leaking from under your car. Water coming from the back of the engine compartment is usually air conditioning condensation, and water near the tailpipe is exhaust condensation.

But, if the fluid under your car isn’t water, that could be a sign of more serious problems. Learn more about whether or not your car is leaking water or another fluid with the service team at Shottenkirk Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Then, check out our service specials in Canton!

Identifying the Fluid Under Your Car

If your car is leaking water in Cumming, but isn’t clear, it’s not water and could be a sign of a serious problem. Place a sheet of white paper underneath the leak and use this guide to identify the fluid under your car:

  • Red – Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid
  • Orange – Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant
  • Yellow – Radiator Coolant
  • Green – Antifreeze from Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator
  • Blue – Windshield Wiper Fluid
  • Dark Brown – Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil
  • Light Brown – Newer Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant
  • Pink – Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid

Pinpoint the Cause of Fluid Leaking

If water is leaking from under your car, taking these steps can help you pinpoint the cause of the fluid leaking:

  • A sign of a blown gasket will be a significant amount of fluid coming from the exhaust as well as white smoke due to coolant being burned.
  • Coolant is usually easy to spot due to its red or orange color, but checking the coolant level can help you determine where the leak is coming from.
  • A cracked windshield wiper fluid reservoir is another possible reason for a leak under your car. Sometimes, water will seep into the reservoir, freeze in cold water, and then expand, causing the reservoir to crack. It’s typically light blue or green and will be found by the front tires.
